Grade
Three
(Kitah Gimel) Curriculum
Language Arts
In Third Grade, we develop fluent, thoughtful, lifelong readers
through exposure to a wide variety of literary styles. We reinforce
and extend basic skills with emphasis on comprehension, and
content areas. We encourage creativity and personal expression
by providing many opportunities to write using different genres.
Sample units may include: Fairytales, Mystery Madness, Medieval
Times, Realistic Fiction, Biomes of North America, Worldwide
Folktales, Biographies of Artists, Great Women in History,
Historical Fiction, or Multicultural Fiction
Math
We review and build on the foundation of the experiences
the children received in previous years. We move towards more
sophisticated computational and abstract thinking skills. The
program continues to enrich and remediate when needed. A continuing
goal is for students to feel comfortable and proficient with
the skills they are acquiring and to understand the mathematical
operations they use. In addition to a review of the skills
described in previous grades, students learn new Problem Solving
skills and the use of calculators. Major units of study may
include Money, Multiplication, Fractions and Geometry.
Science
In Third Grade students use the scientific process
and further develop their observation skills, while exploring
scientific concepts. Sample units may include: Communities,
Bones and Muscles, Air-an Invisible Push, Heat and Temperature,
Measurement, Electric Circuits
Social Studies
An overall goal for third grade is to use Social Studies
as a tool for critical thinking, and for students to begin
acquiring research skills through the study of history. Students
are taught geography and map skills. Sample units may include:
Communities/Cultures, Study of Medieval Times, Environmental
Awareness, and Current Events
Hebrew Language
The emphasis in third grade is to further develop comprehension
in Hebrew reading and to strengthen independent reading skills.
Jewish
History, Israel, Jewish Life and Observances
In kitah gimel, the major goals are for the students
to become familiar with the history, customs, and brachot for
each holiday. We try to instill in the children Jewish values
and the importance of living as a "mensch" and
to have children link the values taught in school to their
daily life. We hope to develop greater independence and a sense
of responsibility for each student.
Sacred Texts
The curriculum stresses instruction in, and understanding of,
ethics, morals and values through intensive exposure to classical
Jewish text. In all grades Parashat Hashavua (the weekly Torah
portion) is discussed. In the third grade the children are
given Chumashim (Bibles). On Monday or Thursday mornings the
children attend a Shacharit/Torah reading service. The Torah
readers are our fourth and/or fifth graders and the services
are lead by the same classes.
