Five
(Kitah Hay) Curriculum
Language Arts
In Fifth Grade, Language Arts goals are to instill a love and
appreciation for all types of literature, while showing the
relevance of literature to other studies, such as history.
Students develop the ability to make inferences, think critically,
and substantiate one's opinion. Sample units may include:
Survival, Historical Fiction (Civil War/Revolutionary War eras,)
Author Study, Focus on friendship, Conflicts, Shakespeare,
Conflict Between Man and Man, Conflict Between Man and Nature,
Endangered Species, Tall Tales, Assorted novels used
Math
In Fifth Grade, we continue to review and build on
the experiences the children received the previous years. We
move towards more sophisticated and abstract thinking, problem
solving, computation, analyzing math strategies and assessment
of math performance. We introduce new concepts and continue
to integrate math into all aspects of our program. We extend
math experiences using hands on activities, manipulative and
practice skills. Sample units include Number Relations, Mental
Math, Statistics/Probability, Geometric Relation, Rational
numbers (fractions/decimals) and pre-algebra.
Science
In Fifth Grade students continue using the scientific
process and further develop their observation skills. There
is more emphasis on hypothesizing and using models. Sample
units may include: Properties of Matter, Bounce, Mass, Volume,
Density, Chemistry (White Powders), Human Physiology, The Body
as a City, Genetics
Social Studies
In fifth grade students identify additional tools
and techniques used by historians. The overriding subject area
for the year is the history of the United States. This includes
Native Americans, Age of Exploration, Colonization, Thirteen
Original Colonies, Articles of Confederation, Constitution,
Presidents, Western Expansion, Jewish migrations to the United
States and contributions made by Jews.
Hebrew and Jewish History
Hebrew is integrated into all aspects of the Jewish Studies
curriculum. Emphasis in fifth grade is placed on fluency in
Hebrew reading and writing; to expand the student's understanding
of Hebrew syntax and grammar and to encourage creativity and
self-expression in Hebrew. By coordinating the history program
with the Hebrew Language curriculum we are able to integrate
language instruction and history. In fifth grade the history
of Modern Israel is taught in Hebrew
Jewish
Life and Observance
A major goal in kitah hey is to foster a love for
Jewish learning and appreciation for Jewish heritage, as well
as to help develop Jewish identity. We encourage students to
apply Jewish ethics and values to daily living and to reinforce
respect for Jewish values and a sense of responsibility towards
the community, Israel and the Jewish people. Students lead
the week Torah service; publicly read from the Torah; and as
gabba'im (Torah Assistants) and Hagbah/Gelila (Torah
dressers.) On Friday afternoons fifth grade students run the
Kabbalat Shabbat service.
Sacred Texts
The curriculum stresses instruction in, and understanding of,
ethics, morals and values through intensive exposure to classical
Jewish text. Sample units may include: Book of Genesis, Begin
Book of Shemot, Life and Leadership of Moshe, Selected Mishnayot
that correlate to holiday themes, Brit Milah, Pidyon Ha-ben,
Simhat Bat, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Marriage, Death and Mourning.
