How can a solid substance convert into a liquid in a matter of seconds?
While learning about changing states of matter through chemical and physical reactions, fifth graders worked in collaboration to create a substance called 'Ooblek' and answer the posed question above. By applying deductive reasoning, teamwork, and hands-on experiments, students found that Ooblek changes states of matter due to the reaction between water and cornstarch. It also has a different viscosity than other substances, which is dependent on the force applied. This amusing and educational experiment others taught in Perelman's Science classes, students develop a passion for science at an early age!
