Perelman Students Engage in Conversations about Food Insecurity

Perelman fourth grade students are asking big questions and engaging in authentic conversations about an important social issue — food insecurity: 

- What are the causes and effects of food insecurity? 

- What responsibilities do we have toward those experiencing hunger? 

- What are the most effective ways to help solve this problem? 

Learning from experts at hunger relief organizations MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger and ShareFood Program, as well as from Perelman Parent and Jewish environmental expert Nati KatzPassow, our young activists are seeing how even elementary students can be advocates for positive change. This social studies unit — which integrated reading, writing, and civic engagement — culminated in letter-writing to government officials, as well as a student-designed art display to further educate everyone who walks Perelman’s halls about the causes, effects, and potential solutions to food insecurity.
