Sukkot Celebrations in the Sukkah and in the Classroom
Students have prepared for a special Sukkot holiday through learning and discussing timeless themes—agriculture, hospitality, impermanence, adaptability, gratitude—as they take joy in the beauty of dwelling in the sukkah with friends and family.
Students built model sukkahs in the Makerspace and created festive decorations to adorn our community sukkah. They enjoyed lively celebrations that brought family members of all generations together. Students also dove deeper into learning the symbolism of the holiday—including the traditional four species, the significance of sitting in an impermanent structure, and welcoming guests.
Students expanded their inclusion of ushpizin, or “guests,” beyond our traditional ancestors to include 37 modern-day heroes that have made a huge impact on Israel and America, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Tzipi Shavit, Ilan Ramon, and Yoseph Haddad Students researched a chosen hero, drew pictures to decorate the sukkah with their presence, and wrote about their heroes’ contributions in Hebrew.
